Lesson Title: The Church has 95 problems, and Martin Luther's #1. Background knowledge: Students should have previously discussed the Italian Renaissance, Humanism, the spread of Renaissance ideas, and the role of the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages (8th grade objective) Introduction: Students were asked to fill out a Middle Ages questionnaire anonymously yesterday in class. To introduce this lesson, the results for each class will be posted for all to see. Link to form Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: 9th grade World History 1500-present. Objectives: At the end of this lesson students will understand the reasoning behind the Protestant Reformation and key players involved within the movement. Standards Addressed: Alabama Course of Student - World History 1500-present 3.) Explain causes of the Reformation and its impact, including tensions between religious and secular authorities, reformers and doctrines, the Counter-Reformation, the English Reformation, and wars of religion. Relative Advantage: By utilizing selected video clips, students should be more engaged as the video clips are geared towards their age/grade level, bringing familiar tunes into the learning environment. Timeline: Three, fifty minute class period. Materials: LCD projector, Slide presentation on the Protestant Reformation, YouTube videos linked below, Edict of Worms handouts, Catholic Church’s response handout. One laptop computer per group with Audacity sound recording and editing software. One microphone per group. Peer evaluations . Grouping Strategies: This lesson will be a teacher led class discussion with leading questions until assessment where students will be placed into group of four. Learning Activities: Day 1: 1. Review of Erasmus - Video clip - class discussion 2. View slide presentation - “The concept of Indulgences’ with discussion questions. 3. View slide presentation - “Who was Martin Luther?” with discussion questions. 4. View 95 Theses rap video Day 2 & 3: 5. Small group song construction. (handout below) Assessment: Students must make a song in response to the 95 Theses’ from the Catholic Church’s viewpoint. Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Students will be grouped with their peer helper. Copy of notes and slides will be given to students at the beginning of lesson. Extra time will be given if needed.
